Welcome !
Welcome to LIReefs.com! This site came about when a small group of good friends began talking about the need for a reef keeping forum that was dedicated to those of us who call Long Island home. There are a few very good sites that cater to reefing but we wanted a site that was friendly, easy going and dedicated to Long Island Reefers! Our hope is for this site to be a place were members can share information, idea's, thoughts and opinions. To help those members new to the hobby as well as a place for our "Old Salty Dogs" to show and hopefully spread their knowledge of this wonderful hobby. So WELCOME!

Acans
The Large Polyp Stony (LPS) coral Acanthastrea spp. is still expensive even as of 2012. We've been watching the prices on these acans corals for years and for some reason they are still one of the more expensive out there even though they are fragged relatively easily.

Zoanthids and Zoanthus
Zoanthidae corals are common in importation and in aquaculture. You should have no trouble finding these available. They are considered to be quite hardy. Typically, they are forgiving of various lighting conditions, and enjoy moderate to strong water current. In nature, they are particularly fond of high light intensity, strong current, and prefer to be closer to shore.

Mushrooms and Ricordea
Mushrooms & Ricordea corals are, on the whole, relatively easy to keep. Most are quite appropriate for the beginning aquarist. They generally reproduce rapidly in captivity and spead over rockwork moving toward the light. Individual species require somewhat different lighting and current velocity, but all are photosynthetic. Some have long sweeper tentacles and need to be placed accordingly.

Protein Skimmers
A protein skimmer or foam fractionator is a device used mostly in saltwater aquaria to remove organic compounds from the water before they break down into nitrogenous waste. Protein skimming is the only form of aquarium filtration that physically removes organic compounds before they begin to decompose, lightening the load on the biological filter and improving the water's redox potential.

Herbivores
Herbivorous coral reef fishes are those that feed mainly or entirely on plant material found within coral reef ecosystems. Most of the biomass of herbivorous fishes found within coral reef ecosystems is distributed among only a few major groups in both the Indo-Pacific and Greater Caribbean regions. These are Parrotfishes, Surgeonfishes, Rabbitfishes and Dameslfishes.

Planktivores
Planktivorous coral reef fishes are those that prey upon small animal plankton (zooplankton). There are several widely used strategies to this mode of feeding. These include specialized genera and species of damselfishes (see Chromis, left), wrasses, snappers, sea basses, and surgeonfishes. It also includes small cardinalfishes (Apogonidae) and larger squirrelfishes and soldierfishes.

Benthic Carnivores
The term "benthic carnivores" (also sometimes referred to as benthivores) is used here to describe fishes that prey on a variety of invertebrate animals (and sometimes small fishes) living on or near the reef substrate or nearby sea floor habitats. As a group, benthic carnivores make up the majority of fish species associated with coral reef ecosystems. These include Butterflyfishes, Triggerfishes and Trunkfishes.

Seahorse Ranch!
Seahorses are truly unique, and not just because of their unusual equine shape. Unlike most other fish, they are monogamous and mate for life. Rarer still, they are among the only animal species on Earth in which the male bears the unborn young. If your into these amazing creatures this is your section!
