About Kings Park - New York
Forty-eight miles from Times Square and 15 miles inside Suffolk County, between bigger and wealthier Northport and Smithtown, Kings Park is best known for its state mental hospital. Founded 95 years ago, the hospital was originally for residents of Kings County - hence its name and that of the village, which in 1887 was little more than a railroad station and farms.
It borders Nissequogue to its east across the river, with Fort Salonga to its west, Commack to its southwest and Smithtown to its east. Kings Park is noted for its schools, numerous parks, and natural beauty.
Kings Park has five miles of shoreline, almost all publicly owned, and more parkland, open space and recreation area than most Long Island communities. It borders on one of the few rivers on Long Island, the Nissequogue, ideal for canoeing. These natural resources are complemented by what some call the cosy atmosphere of Kings Park. The heart of the community is Main Street, with its mixture of buildings, some newly renovated and others still dating back to the turn of the century. Just south of Main Street and the railroad station is where Reddy's grocery store was located where many of the town's tradesmen and Republican politicians would gather for morning coffee and conversation in the back room. Main Street (actually Route 25A, which stretches east from the East River) has only two lanes in Kings Park. Unlike most such roads that become gasoline alleys in other communities, it is tree-lined and residential except for the four-block business area of the village itself.
